Let me check their about page real quick! I don’t know about you but everytime I read a blog post or visit any website, I usually head to the about us page after I read what I was looking for.
Why do I do this? Well, in the first place because I’m nosey lol and second because I like to see who is behind what I’m reading to see if I should take it seriously or not.
And it surprises me everytime I found a website without an about page, especially if it’s a small business website or a blog. That’s why I wanted to make sure to include this topic inside my Small Website Must Haves Series. So I can’t stress this enough:
EVERY SMALL BUSINESS WEBSITE MUST HAVE AN AWESOME ABOUT PAGE
A website’s About Page is PRIME REAL ESTATE. It gives you the opportunity to connect with your clients, help them relate to you, see the person behind the business and ultimately earn their business.
There are hundreds of cupcake shops, realtors, lawyers and restaurants, and that’s only 10 miles around you. So, what makes your business different? Well…YOU! Your service, your commitment, your dream and having an about page gives you the perfect opportunity to share this to your clients.
Let me tell you a well-known secret… People follow people! Clients would go out of their way to buy a product from a business that the like and that shares their values or to do donate to a cause that they feel strongly related, that’s why it’s important to show who you are and let your clients know you and your business enough through your about page so that they can feel emotionally related to your brand.
You can be as creative as you want on you about page and you can name it in many different ways.
Here are some examples of Titles for your about page:
- ABOUT US
- ABOUT ME
- THE TEAM
- OUR COMPANY
- OUR VALUES
- WHO ARE WE
- ME / US
- THE COMPANY NAME
Use whatever matches you corporate identity and your brand but keep in mind to be always authentic and personal without losing the proffesional goal behind it. Writing an about us page might seem simple to do but writing a well-thought out about page that converts is not an easy task. It’s all about finding a balance. In your copy you should aim to balance personal and relatable facts with professional and customer service details that would ultimately help you make a sale. To achieve this balance you should paint a picture to your clients, connect to them in an emotional way, (maybe by showing vulnerability or stating a specific problem that they might be encountering) and then presenting yourself [your business] as the solution.
Let me show you a few examples of about pages:
Excellent Personal – Business Balance
Hi there. If we haven’t met, my name is Mr. Money Mustache. I’m the freaky financial magician who retired along with a lovely wife at age 30 in order to start a family, as well as start living a great life. We did this on two normal salaries with no lottery winnings or Silicon Valley buyout windfalls, by living what we thought was a wonderful and fulfilling existence. It was only after quitting the rat race that we looked around and realized why we had become financially independent while most people, even with higher incomes, end up stuck needing to work until age 65 or later. ~Taken from: www.mrmoneymustache.com
Show Personality while giving them a convinving argument why to hire you
When you decide to work with me you are not hiring an impersonal agency running many projects at the same time. I understand that your business is your baby and giving you a website that you love will be my only priority. When we work together you will have my complete attention and your project will be my foster baby until it’s completed.
My advice as a web designer is when you are making your site, spend some time writing your about us page, don’t just do it to fill up space. Think about your brand, your mision, your values, what makes you and your business different and most importantly think about your target audience. How can you connect with them, what do you have in common with them and why would they choose to support you. A well-written about page will continue to convert for weeks and weeks to come.
Do you ever read about pages, Do you recall any that you thought it was jsut awesome? Please share it with me in the comments.
Thanks again for reading
God Bless ??
